To many people’s dismay, job promotions are not based on seniority. In order to get promoted, specifically to a manager’s position, one has to display the right amount of education, experience and commitment. By going through the motions and simply expecting a promotion to come your way, you may be in for a rude awakening.

With training programmes for every major career stage, 80 percent of management roles are filled by existing team members. But although job promotions are common, they still have to be fought for. If you’re looking to advance your career at your current job, here are some tips to help you along the way. But instead of telling you what you should do, here are things you should not do:
- Show up late. As the saying goes, “Early bird gets the worm.” Being late to work on a consistent basis tells your employer that you are not ready to take on new challenges and responsibilities. If you know you’ll be late, be sure to let your manager know beforehand so they’re aware.
- Talk on your mobile. Unless it’s an emergency, don’t talk on your mobile during work. Doing so shows that you are easily distracted and are more interested in your personal life than your current tasks at work. If you do need to make a phone call, step outside where you won’t distract others.
- Skip meetings. If someone schedules a meeting with you, chances are it’s important. Showing up late or skipping it altogether is rude and leaves a bad impression with your fellow coworkers. If you do need to reschedule, makes sure you communicate it beforehand.
